Posted: Tuesday, August 16, 2011 10:50 pm Tornado QB out; surgery set for Wed. Darren Bowling got the news he was expecting on Monday. And it wasn’t very good. Travis Rutland, slated to be the coach’s starting quarterback for Union City High School this season, is out for the year with a finger injury. Rutland is reportedly to have surgery Wednesday. The rising junior played with what was thought to be just a jammed middle finger on his passing hand for much of the summer and actually had thrown a couple of touchdown passes in a scrimmage just a day before his injury was re-diagnosed. Junior Joseph Shanks, a starting tackle last season for UC and projected to open at guard this season, took all the team’s snaps in Friday’s jamboree against Bruceton and is expected to move to QB — at least part-time. The Tornadoes open their 2011 campaign Saturday night, playing county-rival Obion Central at Troy. Kickoff is slated for 7 o’clock. Hillcrest softball team wins big in first game The Hillcrest Middle School softball team opened its season with a 23-7 triumph over Black Oak on Monday. Courtney Heuck had three hits in four at-bats and drove in four runs to pace the victors. Both Madison Armstrong and Hanna Fulbright had two hits and an RBI apiece, while Mckinleigh Bell, Asatin Moore, Alaina Walker and Justis Person had one hit each. McClain Bell was the winning pitcher. Bethany Gardner had a base knock for BO. Jenna Lee Green was saddled with the loss. Hillcrest’s next outing is Monday at Union City. UCMS warms up with jamboree victory Brantley Clendenin scored twice as Union City blanked Halls, 22-0, in middle school football jamboree action at Humboldt on Monday night. The Golden Tornadoes will open the 2011 season Tuesday, Aug. 23, at home against Northview, kickoff from War Memorial Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Clendenin scored on an 11-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass from Will Sisco as the Twisters built a 16-0 lead. Jacob Hyde scored a two-pointer following Clendenin’s TD scamper and almost had a scoring run of his own but fumbled on the one-yard line after a 19-yard pick-up. UC scored n the play, however, as Saul Tellez recovered the bobble in the end zone. UC scored again when Lazzarus Scribner broke off a 58-yard TD run.
