SFMS softball opens with win over Martin South Fulton opened its middle school softball season with an 8-4 victory over Martin Thursday. Aeriel Wright was the winning pitcher with two strikeouts, a pair of walks and five hits allowed. She helped herself at the dish with a hit. Emma Glisson had a base knock and drove in two runs for the Devilettes, while Katie Watkins, Aalia Bivens, Cassidy Ruddle, Sara McMinn and Tiffany Potts all also had hits for the winners. South Fulton will host Lake Road on Monday. UTM soccer match today pushed back The University of Tennessee at Martin’s soccer match against Arkansas-Pine Bluff today has been moved back to 5 p.m., head coach Phil McNamara has announced. The game will be the first regular-season contest for the Skyhawks, who are coming off an 8-8-2 mark in 2010. The Skyhawks are 6-7 all-time in home openers, but have won six of their last nine dating back to the 2002 season. TWRA sets schedule for hunter safety A TWRA and Martin Parks & Recreation Hunter Safety Course is scheduled to begin Sept. 12 at the UTM Brehm Hall Room 258 at 6 p.m. Participants should be 9 years or older. Classes will be held Sept. 12, 13, 19, 20 and 26. Participants must attend all classes, pass the written test and experience shooting at targets. The free class will be limited to the first 50 people registered. Call 587-6784 to reserve a space, and participants must have their Social Security Number ready when registering. PPK event included for Soybean Festival The Martin Parks & Recreation Department, in conjunction with the 18th annual Soybean Festival, will host a local competition for NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Martin Recreation Complex. The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 6-to-15, with five separate age groups in each division. Participants must supply a copy of their birth certificate and wear soft sole tennis shoes for the competition. For more information call the department at 587-6784.
