UCs Williamson 2nd in cross country event Union City’s Daniel Williamson placed second out of 118 runners at the West Tennessee Cross Country Jamboree, held Saturday at Jackson State Community College. Williamson ran the two-mile course in 10 minutes, 57 seconds. The high school cross country season opens today at Dresden, starting time set for 4:30 p.m.

Kentucky scrimmage looks good to Phillips LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky held its second football scrimmage on Saturday and coach Joker Phillips says he likes what he saw on both sides of the ball. Phillips says the defense got going first and shut down the offense. He says the offensive players came around and scored “a couple of times.” The head coach called it a “pretty competitive scrimmage.” He says he was pleased with the aggressiveness on defense and added that the team is faster this year and working a lot on tackling drills. Phillips says quarterback Morgan Newton is showing good command and threw the ball down the field with authority.

Grizzlies Foundation adds team’s coach MEMPHIS (AP) — Memphis coach Lionel Hollins has been named a member of the Grizzlies Foundation’s board of directors. Hollins already had been working mentoring young people while with the Grizzlies. Now he is expected to expand youth outreach through the Grizzlies Foundation and the Grizzlies TEAM UP Mentoring initiative. Published in The Messenger 8.22.11
