Tax hike raises many concerns To The Editor: As a taxpayer in Obion County for about the last 25 years, I would like to voice my concerns about the property tax hike that was voted in by the Obion County Commission. My first concern is this. We had a major event that lowered the property values for the average taxpayer. The loss of this county’s major employer will suppress property value for years. The 11 commissioners that voted for the increase think it is fitting to raise your taxes on property that has just gone down in value. My second concern is this. If our property tax is based on its assessed value, when can we expect a reassessment to reflect its real value? My third concern is for our 11 commissioners that voted for the increase. I don’t think they have the vision to see that cutbacks in our budget are going to be a harsh reality. In my opinion, those 11 commissioners are certainly drinking the same Kool-Aid™ as our Washington politicians. Joe Konkol Union City Published in The Messenger 8.24.11
