UCMS runs away with opening win
Union City scored in every quarter and knocked off Northview 28-6 in the Golden Tornadoes’ middle school football season opener Tuesday at War Memorial Stadium. D’Carrious Stephens scored two touchdowns, while Brantley Clendenin and Taj Reid had one each for Union City. Clendenin and Jacob Hyde each added a two-point conversion. Clendenin started UC’s scoring with a five-yard run in the first quarter. After Northview tied the game at 6-all in the second, UC followed with the go-ahead TD as Stephens ran in from seven yards out. Hyde added the two-pointer. Reid’s 30-yard run followed by Clendenin’s conversion run put the Twisters up 22-6 in the third, and then Stephens reached paydirt on a four-yard scamper in the fourth period. Reid led the Tornadoes with 97 yards rushing on eight carries, while Hyde added 85 yards on 10 tries. Hyde and Jamison Blackwell each had six tackles, and Clendenin added five stops for UC. Union City hosts Martin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Ridgemont’s innings too much for Cougars
Ridgemont erupted for six runs in the fourth and another half-dozen in the fifth to win for the second time in as many outings Tuesday, 15-2 over Hillcrest, in middle school softball play. Winning pitcher Sheri-dan Bugg (five strikeouts, one walk), helped herself at the plate with a triple, double and single. Macy Muirhead had an inside-the-park home run and a single, Carly Bramlett doubled and singled and Landry Webster had a two-base hit. Both Keaton Cooper and Kari O’Steen were involved defensively in double plays for the winners. For Hillcrest (1-1), Courtney Heuck went 3-for-3 with a triple and both Alaina Walker and Asatin Moore had one hit apiece. McClain Bell was the losing hurler. The Cougars reported 15 errors in the loss. Hillcrest plays again Thursday at Dyer. In a 15-5 victory over Union City, Webster had an inside-the-park home run, Muirhead laced a triple and Kaelyn Puckett had a double. Bugg was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts.
Cousar leads Twisters to prep golf triumph
The Union City High School boys’ golf team went on the road Tuesday and won at Ripley by a 174-186 count. Christian Cousar was the match medalist with a 40 to lead the Tornadoes. Grand Walton was a shot back at 41, Clay Treece came in with a 46, Wesley Hale had a 47 and Parker Dodson finished with a 51. UC will play Thursday vs. Obion Central and Trenton at the Wingfoot Golf Course. School-record goals not enough for SF
South Fulton tied a school record for goals in a game, but still came out on the short end of a 7-5 score vs. Covington in prep soccer action on Tuesday. Desiray Sturgeon had a pair of penalty kicks for goals and Morgan Kane booted in two more tallies as the Devilettes rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 4-all haltime tie.
