Events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks are planned by the University of Tennessee at Martin Institute of Civic Engagement throughout this week leading up to Sept. 11.

Events and activities include:

• Wednesday – The Institute for Civic Engagement will feature its weekly “Times Talk” discussion forum on “Remembering 9/11: Student Reflections on a Day of Terror.” UT Martin faculty, staff, students and community members will meet to reflect on 9/11 and its impact. The forum will begin at noon in the Skyhawk Cafeteria, Room 125, Boling University Center.

• Thursday – A memorial ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the University Center Plaza, located between the Boling University Center and the Paul Meek Library. Chancellor Tom Rakes will welcome guests, and the national anthem will be presented. Selected readings are also scheduled to take place. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held in the Watkins Auditorium, Boling University Center.

• Friday – There will be a campus-wide pause between 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., reflecting the times the twin towers were struck. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to step outside and observe a moment of silence in respect for those who lost their lives.

• Sunday will be observed as a national day of service. Student organizations and community members are encouraged to participate by conducting their own community service on or around 9/11 in remembrance of the day. On the other side of the county, a Greenfield church has extended a special invitation to the community in remembrance of the 9/11 events. The Moore’s Chapel Church family in Greenfield will be hosting a special service Sunday to remember those lives that were lost 10 years ago during the 9/11 attack and to honor local police, fire, emergency workers and armed services personnel and their families. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. and morning worship follows at 11 a.m.

A noon meal will be provided for local patriots and their families. Everyone is invited to come out and fellowship on this very special day.
