Miller, Elswick named Capital One standouts
Jenna Miller and Kasey Elswick, members of the UT Martin volleyball team, have been named as 2011 Capital One Academic All-District first team selections, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Together, UT Martin accounts for two of the five academic all-district first-teamers in the Ohio Valley Conference. In reward for their first team selections, Miller and Elswick will be placed on the Academic All-American ballot that will be voted on later this month.
For Miller, the accolade comes just days after she was named as one of three female OVC Scholar Athletes, the highest individual award an OVC student-athlete can receive. The setter from Highland Village, Texas, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in political science.
A 5-7 junior out of Louisville, Elswick sports a 3.96 GPA in the classroom while majoring in accounting.
a ‘Madness’ winner
UT Martin sophomore guard Heather Butler was named College Sports Madness Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for her performance this past week against Belmont and Air Force.
Butler helped the Skyhawks (2-0) defeat Belmont and Air Force. She scored 19 points and had eight rebounds in the Skyhawks’ 67-48 victory over Belmont on Friday night. She followed that effort up with 23 points and six rebounds in the 84-60 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Skyhawk QB Carr
earns weekly honor
UT Martin junior quarterback Derek Carr was named College Football Performance Awards Quarterback of the Week.
Carr passed for 329 yards and four touchdowns in UTM’s football game against host Tennessee State.
Carr completed 25-of-43 passes without an interception in the Ohio Valley Conference battle at LP Field in Nashville.
The Skyhawks return to action Saturday when they play at Eastern Kentucky in Richmond. Kickoff is set for noon.
