Dyersburg State Community College, along with area elected officials, will host grand openings of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Dyersburg and Covington.
This is the second year DSCC has joined the Family Self-Sufficiency Alliance of West Tennessee to provide this free service for area taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $40,000.
The alliance was formed by the United Way of West Tennessee in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
The grand opening of the VITA program in Dyersburg will be Thursday at 4:45 p.m. at the DSCC Learning Resource Center. VITA will be open in Dyersburg every Monday and Thursday from 5-8 p.m. For information, contact Teresa Johnson, dean of the LRC, by telephone at (731) 286-3226 or by e-mail at TJohnson@dscc.edu.
The grand opening of the VITA program in Covington will be Thursday at noon in the Learning Resource Center in the New Academic Building at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center. To use the service, clients must bring a valid photo I.D.; all W-2 and 1099 forms, if any; Social Security cards for the filer and for all of their family members (individual Taxpayer Identification Number cards may substitute); bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit; a copy of their 2006 tax return, if available; and childcare provider information and tax identification number, if any. If the filing status is “married, filing jointly,” both spouses must be present to sign the forms.
The Family Self-Sufficiency Alliance of West Tennessee was formed by the United Way of West Tennessee in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. Local businesses, non-profit agencies, members of the faith-based community and the public sector are all members of the alliance.
DSCC is a part of this alliance by hosting the site and recruiting volunteers.
First Citizens National Bank and First South Bank are also sponsoring the local program. The alliance will be active in promoting economic self-sufficiency and financial stability by hosting, with the IRS and AARP, free tax preparation sites throughout West Tennessee.
