Weekly ‘Pop’ event
goes to tie-breaker

Poplar Meadows Country Club held its weekly men’s scramble Wednesday with the winning team shooting 7-under par.
Members of the winning team, in a scorecard playoff, included Gary Gill, Amos Davis, Sid Chappell, Jim Baker and Houston Haag.
Finishing in second was the team of Tony Westbrooks, Chris Tidwell, Robert King, David Carlton, Raymond Hendrix and Glen Hale.
The scramble, which is $10 for members and $15 for non-members, includes the 9-hole event and dinner afterward.
It begins at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday and participants are encouraged to call the club by 5:15 each week.

UTM men’s hoops hosting elite camp

The UT Martin men’s basketball coaching staff will host an elite camp June 22 at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Potential campers must be going into the 8th grade at the start of the 2012-13 school year.
The campers will receive offensive, defensive and shooting instruction from a Division-I coaching staff.
There also will be a strength and conditioning session as well as a video breakdown segment of the camp.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. in the Elam Center.
The cost is $45, with lunch included.

Memphis player gets
fifth season to play

MEMPHIS (AP) — Memphis guard Charles Carmouche has received a fifth year of eligibility from the NCAA under a medical hardship request.
Tigers coach Josh Pastner announced the approval Wednesday. Carmouche graduated in May, and Pastner says he will meet with the 6-foot-3 guard to evaluate his next move.
Carmouche played in seven games last season and started four of those, averaging 6.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
He shot 46.2 percent from 3-point range before severe tendinitis in both knees kept him from playing the rest of the season.
A native of New Orleans, La., he transferred to Memphis from the University of New Orleans in 2010.
He has played in 92 games with 75 starts while with the Tigers. Published in The Messenger 6.7.12
