The Gen. Otho French Strahl Camp 176, Sons of Confederate Veterans, conducted its monthly meeting recently at the Obion County Museum on Edwards Street in Union City.
Commander Danny Isbell opened the meeting by leading the pledge to the United States flag and the SCV Flag Salute. Chaplain Mike Alexander led the opening prayer.
Past commander Bill Threlkeld gave a very interesting program, reading excerpts from a war years diary written by Lou Cowbill, who lived on the state line north of Woodland Mills and near where Threlkeld lives now. Her day-by-day entries gave a very vivid picture of events taking place during those troubled times.
Members were updated on the cleaning of the Chambers-Holman Cemetery across the road from Memorial Gardens. Another work day is needed to complete this project.
The possibility of hosting a Tennessee Scenic Views display at the Obion County Public Library was announced. There are to be 23 pictures displayed of Tennessee views to be preserved for future generation to enjoy.
Sympathy and condolences were extended to the family of compatriot Mickey Stout of the Dresden Camp.
The meeting was closed in prayer by Alexander. There were 15 members and one guest present.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the nation’s largest Southern heritage, history and honor organization open to all male descendants of a Confederate soldier who served honorably in the War for Southern Independence.
