UT Martin outshot host Butler 17-16, but neither team could convert its chances in a 0-0 double overtime tie in collegiate soccer action Sunday at the Butler Varsity Field.
Junior Hannah McGowen led the way for the Skyhawks (1-3-1) with four shots of attempts, two of which were on goal. Midori Sera and Saphyra Coombs-James also recorded three shot attempts each for UT Martin.
Sophomore Mariah Klenke recorded her first shutout of the season and third of her career this afternoon, tallying a pair of saves in all 110 minutes.
Sera fired the Skyhawks’ first shot today, but her shot went wide left at the 4:34 mark. After a Dominika Conc attempt was blocked in the 11th minute, Coombs-James put UT Martin’s first shot on goal at the 12:59 mark, but Butler goalkeeper Mackenzie Hopkins made the save.
Coombs-James and McGowen combined for three more shot attempts over the next 14:08. Conc delivered a shot on goal off a corner kick in the 30th minute, but Hopkins snared another save.
The action in the first half would soon slow down, with Abi Sanvee attempting the only shot for either side at the 44:54 mark (wide right).
At the break, the Skyhawks had doubled up the Bulldogs in shot attempts (8-4).
Sera and McGowen each broke through for shot attempts within 1:31 of each other to begin the second half, as McGowen’s nearly snuck past Hopkins before she recorded the save.
Klenke made her first stop of the day at the 75:10 mark, preserving the 0-0 score. Less than four minutes later, Ashley Reveiz fired a shot on goal but Hopkins was there for the save once again.
With 3:43 left to go in regulation, Sera sent a shot that nearly found the back of the net before hitting the crossbar. That began a late push for UT Martin, as Coombs-James (87:27, high) and McGowen (89:16, Hopkins save) each attempted shots at the end of regulation.
Butler would outshoot UT Martin 3-0 in the first overtime period, but Klenke ensured the game would go into an extra overtime period, making a save at the 94:32 mark.
The Skyhawks were responsible for the first two shots in the double overtime period, as Sanvee had an attempt blocked and Curtis fired a shot that curved right.
Butler attempted a pair of shots in the final 17 seconds of the match, including one that hit the post with eight seconds left, but the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
Purdue 2, UTM 0
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — UTM fell in an early hole Friday at Purdue and could not recover, falling 2-0 to the Boilermakers at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex.
The Skyhawks attempted nine shots, two of which were on goal. Sophomore Alyssa Curtis led the offense with three attempts, while Hannah McGowen fired a pair of shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Mariah Klenke recorded seven saves in all 90 minutes.
Klenke was put to the test early, earning a sliding save at the 1:55 mark. She also came up with a big overhead stop just under eight minutes into the match to keep the match scoreless before Purdue got on the scoreboard at the 9:09 mark.
UT Martin would attempt its first shot of the match at the 10:24 mark, but McGowen’s attempt would veer left.
Purdue added to its lead in the 16th minute, but the Skyhawks nearly cut their deficit in half in the 24th minute. James nearly came up with her third goal of the season but Clara Kridler made a one-handed save while falling down.
Only 40 seconds later, Curtis fired a shot on goal but Kridler made the save in heavy traffic.
Jaclyn Heckle would attempt a header off a corner kick at the 28:38 mark but the shot went wide left.
Meanwhile, the Skyhawk defense stepped up and did not concede a shot attempt for a stretch of 28:53. As a result, Purdue had only outshot UT Martin by a 6-4 margin at the halftime break.
Klenke came up with a pair of saves from point-blank range in a span of 49 seconds early in the second half. Starting in the 65th minute, she also notched two more saves in a stretch of 2:11 to keep the score at 2-0. Her final stop of the night was also a highlight save, as she rejected a penalty kick attempt at the 74:06 mark.
Ashley Reveiz (60th minute) and Midori Sera (67th) attempted UT Martin’s first two shots of the second half. The Skyhawks would not get another opportunity until three shots were attempted over a stretch of 1:03 with less than two minutes to play in the match. Published in The WCP 9.4.12
