The middle school football season is quickly winding down for the four county teams as Greenfield has one game left after Monday’s game against Stewart County Middle School.
Martin was scheduled to play I.B. Tigrette tonight, but it has been canceled due to the parent/teacher conference taking place today from noon until 6 p.m. at the middle school.
Martin did play at Henry County last week and came out with a 38-8 win. Greenfield fell one touchdown short of Stewart County 30-22.
Dresden and Gleason will knock heads tonight at Gleason. A Dresden win will give them the Reelfoot Conference title. This will be the Bulldogs last game of the season.
Greenfield will wrap up its season on Monday at West Carroll. Martin has two games remaining with both being away — at Dresden and at Inman. Dresden’s season will come to an end when it plays host to Martin on Oct. 4.
Martin 38, HC 8
Heath Hester ran for a couple of scores and Martin continued its winning ways last week.
Hester scored from one-yard out and returned a punt for a 64-yard TD.
Brantley Baxter ran for a 30-yard touchdown and Shawn Barner scored a 20 yard touchdown.
Joe Ray Perry ran for a three-yard score, made a two-point conversion and had eight tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
Cameron Jones, Trevor Holland and Dean Taylor each made two-point conversions for the Panthers. The Panthers are now 4-1 after the win.
SC 30, Greenfield 22
Greenfield’s Dusty Irby did all that he could do Monday night against Stewart County by getting the Yellowjackets to within one TD with 1:30 left in the game.
Greenfield stopped SC on a fourth down play in the red zone and Irby broke loose on an 85-yard run for a TD. Ross Northcutt passed to Levi Dees for the two-point conversion to get the ’Jackets to within eight points.
The ’Jackets attempted the onside kick, but SC fell on it and was able to run down the clock to preserve the win.
Irby had another big run in the first quarter with an 80-yard kickoff return for a TD after SC scored first in the game. The two-point conversion failed, to make it 8-6. The Rebels led 22-6 at the half and increased its lead to 30-6 in the second half.
Jacob Lewis ran for a short yardage score after the ’Jackets drove the ball down the field. Northcutt connected with Dees after that score for the two-point conversion.
Martin was a winner while Greenfield and Dresden suffered losses against teams from Obion County.
The Lady Panthers kept Lake Road winless on the season with a 14-0 win.
Dresden was on the other end of a shutout with a 5-0 loss to South Fulton, while Greenfield scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning only to see Ridgemont match that in the bottom half of the inning for a 4-3 win.
The games were the last ones on the regular season schedules of Martin and Dresden.
Greenfield is scheduled to host Trenton today at 4:30 p.m. Published in The WCP 9.27.12
