Only the South Fulton boys’ team remains of Obion County’s entries in Area 5 Middle School Tournament.
The Red Devils earned a spot in tonight’s championship round as well as a spot in the West Sectional with a 51-32 victory over Paris Inman Wednesday night in the Area 5 semifinals.
Top-seeded SF, which improved to 15-2 with Wednesday’s win, will face No. 3 Martin (10-6), a 49-39 victor over second-seeded Ridgemont in Wednesday’s other semifinal game.
The boys’ title game is set for 7:30 p.m. at South Fulton High School following the girls’ championship title pitting top seed Inman against Martin at 6.
Inman upset No. 1 Lake Road 35-18  and Martin beat South Fulton 37-23 in Wednesday’s girls’ semifinals to advance to punch their tickets to tonight’s finals and the sectional tournament.
The 2012-13 season is now over for Obion County entries Lake Road and South Fulton on the girls’ side and Ridgemont in boys’ play.
The following is a recap of Wednesday’s action.
SF 51, Inman 32 (B)
Jyriq Jones had 13 points and three assists while Zaccious Mays finished with 10 points and nine rebounds to help the Redmen extend their season.
Kody Davidson gave SF a third player in double digits with 10 points and also dished out three assits.
The Redmen were in command with a 14-5 lead after one and stretched that advantage to 26-10 at the half.
Inman ends its season with a 7-9 mark.
Martin 49, R’mont 39 (B)
The Panthers grabbed a big lead in the first half and then had to hold on as Ridgemont put together a strong comeback in the third period.
Martin jumped on the Mustangs in the first two periods, ahead 16-2 after one and 30-8 at the half.
But, Ridgemont outscored the Panthers 15-3 in the third to pull within 33-23.
Ty Kelly scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter, hitting a pair of free throws in four chances, while Cameron Jones hit 3-of-4 at the line in the fourth for Martin.
Tyler Hopper got Martin off to a fast start, scoring eight of his 11 points in the first frame, while Matt McMillan added 10 points. He hit two 3-pointers and scored seven points in the second quarter.
Jaylee Hobbs had a game-best 18 points, including eight in the third period, and Alden Marvin hit three 3-pointers en route to 13 points for the Ponies.
The Mustangs connected on 13 2-point baskets and three triples while also hitting 4-of-9 at the line.
Inman 35, LR 18 (G)
Down just 20-15 entering the fourth quarter after a slow start, the Lady Generals saw their season end when they were outscored 15-3 in the final frame.
LR trailed 7-3 after the first period.
Bryleigh Jennings had 10 points to pace the General girls
Lake Road’s campaign concludes with a 12-6 mark.
Martin 37, SF 23 (G)
Tasia Jones scored nine of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 7-of-9 free throws, to pace the Lady Panthers.
Martin led 12-8 after one period and 18-15 at the half and then pitched a shutout in the third frame to grab a 24-15 advantage.
Jordyn Greene added 10 points, and Lydia Pritchett pitched in eight points for Martin.
Diamond Smith had 13 points, seven in the fourth period, for South Fulton.
The Red Devilettes were good on seven 2-pointers and a pair of treys but hit just 3-of-10 at the free throw line. Published in The Messenger 1.31.13
