Familiar beginning for Panther soccer
In the traditional style of Martin Middle School soccer, the Panthers got off to another good start with both junior varsity and varsity earning shutout wins over defending district champion Trinity Christian Academy last Thursday in Jackson. The Martin JV squad won 1-0 with the Panther varsity team picking up a 3-0 victory. In the junior varsity action, Martin began with a goal mid way through the second half from seventh-grader Jorge Fabian. Panther goalies Scout Edwards and Drake Vincent made Martin’s lone goal stand up. The duo shared the duties in the goal as the Panthers shut out the TCA Lions for the 1-0 win. In the varsity game, the Panthers got off to a quick start with goals by eighth-grader Adam Reinhard and sixth-grader Alex Ross in the first half. The Panthers enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the intermission. In the second half, Reinhard came through with his second goal of the night to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. That total remained until the end of regulation resulting in a 3-0 Martin win. Panther goalies Tanner Bell, a sixth-grader, and Edwards, an eighth-grader shared the duties in front of the net in the varsity game to shut out the host TCA Lions. According to MMS head coach Stan Vickers, the Panthers coaching staff was extremely happy with the play of both teams in the wins. After playing at Union City on Monday, the Panthers will be on familiar turf on Thursday for their first home match of the season against Milan. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
